Monday's Reds Trade Rumors

  • Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal tweeted out today that the Reds are drawing interest from several teams on righty Edinson Volquez.  The Dominican native is 5-4 with a 5.93 ERA in 16 starts with the big club this year, although he's currently pitching in the minors with Triple-A Louisville.
  • One source close to the Rockies told Jon Morosi of Fox Sports that the chance of Ubaldo Jimenez being dealt is 50/50.  Also, Cincinnati was among five other teams scouting his start yesterday versus the Diamondbacks according to SI's Jon Heyman.
  • A new name on the trade market has been linked to the Redlegs today in the personnel of the Rays B.J. Upton.  This according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
  • The Reds are still in the mix - as are several teams - in acquiring coveted Padres closer Heath Bell according to ESPN's Jayson Stark.
  • Stark also writes that one executive he spoke to hinted of the possibility of a dark horse like the Reds or Brewers landing Mets OF Carlos Beltran.  He also reports that Tampa Bay is no longer likely to trade ace James Shields.

I wouldn't trade Volquez now, it is the ultimate sell low situation. He is just hit the 1 year back from Tommy John, so now is when he should start to hit his prime. If he can pitch like he did this week going 9 innings without a walk, it makes no sense to trade him or trade for Jimenez.

I'm not a big BJ Upton fan either, I fail to see how he is that much an improvement of Heisey/Sappelt could deliver for the Reds in LF.

I would save the prospects rather than to trade for Upton. Beltran is interesting but I wouldn't give up much of nothing for him being a straight up 2 month rental.

You make some valid points. I'm not ready to give up on Volquez yet either. The guy has proven to be lights out when his head is on right.

I don't see the allure of Upton. He is hitting .229 this year with a OBP of .310. He does have pop (15 HR) and can steal ya some bases (23/30), but I'm not sure he's a real upgrade in left...on or off the field if you know what I mean.

And at the end of the day I can't see the Reds seriously acquiring Beltran. Too much to give away for him to only play in around 55-60 games the rest of the season.

Bell would be great if Dusty would remove Cordero from the closer spot, which will not happen. IMO, the Reds don't invest that type of money in the pen...

I think as long as they're paying Cordero that kind of money, he's gunna be the closer. The reason the Reds initially paid him so much was because they (and fans) we're tired of seeing the 'pen blow games back in '06,'07' & '08, but ended up overpaying.

As nervous as Cordero makes me when he has the ball with a lead, he's still been pretty good overall. However, after this year I believe it's time to go in a different direction (ie-Chapman).

I just read that the Rockies asked for Mesoraco AND Chapman for Jimenez...that is laughable. They might as well not even throw his name out there if they aren't going to be realistic.

Laughable indeed. Gotta start somewhere I guess? *shrugs shoulders*
