- San Diego plucked Triple-A OF Jeremy Hermida outright from the Reds' waivers list on Wednesday. Hermida - an International League All-Star in 2011 - hit .319 with 17 homers and 55 RBI during his time in Louisville this season.
- Hermida's departure puts Cincinnati's 40-man roster at 39 just a day before the rosters are set to expand. His spot will likely be taken by top catching prospect Devin Mesoraco. Mesoraco is hitting .289/.371/.484 with 15 HR and 71 RBI this year for the Bats. He has also thrown out 26% (28-80) of potential base stealers.
- Other likely September 1st callups include 3B Juan Francisco, RHP Carlos Fisher, RHP Jared Burton, LHP Matt Maloney, INF Chris Valaika, and LHP Jeremy Horst, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.
- Chris Heisey (strained oblique) took batting practice with the team on Tuesday and is expected to be activated from the 15-day DL on Thursday.
- On Scott Rolen's rehab back from shoulder surgery. “He looks pretty good,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “He looks freer. I’m sure he doesn’t have the strength and the timing he’d like to have. But he looks a lot freer. He can push his hands back. He wasn’t able to get in his hand position in about three years.”
- Today is the final day for the Head & Shoulders Hats Off Movement contest. If you're on Twitter, remember to use the hastag #HatsOffCIN in your tweets to help the Reds win the grand prize of $50,000 -- which would go toward funding youth league baseball in the city. Entering today the Reds trailed the first-place Giants by about 400 tweets (25,362-24,997).
