Ramon Hernandez on Waivers?

The Reds placed veteran catcher Ramon Hernandez on waivers Wednesday, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com.

Hernandez, who is set to become a free agent at season's end, is currently batting .292 with 11 homers and 33 RBI in 78 games.

There were talks last month that the team may trade the 35-year old before the deadline, but a deal never materialized. If no team claims him within three business days, he will have officially cleared waivers and can be traded to another team at any point in time.

With current backup catcher Ryan Hanigan signed through 2013, and top prospect Devin Mesoraco waiting in the wings, it's unlikely the club resigns Hernandez after the season. However, the Reds could receive a supplemental draft pick if Hernandez does sign as a free agent with another team, but this would only be the case if the Elias Sports Bureau dubs Hernandez as either a "Class A" or "Class B" free agent (ranking in the top 40% of players at his position)

Hernandez joins teammate Bronson Arroyo as notable Reds on the waiver list.

No, just on the waiver list. Another team can elect to select him off there if they wish...until then he remains a Red.
