Arizona Fall League 2011

The Arizona Fall League will commence its 20th season this fall. It is operated by Major League Baseball to provide additional playing time for prospects to refine their skills, and be evaluated by team scouts and executives who watch almost every game. Each MLB team sends seven players, usually Double-A and Triple-A, to make up 35-man rosters for six AFL teams. Notable AFL alumni are Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, Roy Halladay and of course Michael Jordan. The Cincinnati Reds' seven players will play for the Phoenix Desert Dogs.

Pitchers
-Bradley Boxberger (RHP) played in 55 games between Carolina (30 gms) and Louisville (25 gms) this year. Overall he pitched 62 innings and was 2-4, with a 2.03 ERA, 11 saves, 93 strikeouts and 28 walks.
-Nick Christiani (RHP) appeared in 53 games between Carolina (20 gms) and Louisville (33 gms) this year. Overall he pitched 61.1 innings and was 4-3, with a 3.82 ERA, 10 SV, 41 SO, and 20 BB.
-Donnie Joseph (LHP) played in 57 games all with Carolina this year. He threw 58.1 innings and was 1-3, with a 6.94 ERA, 8 SV, 66 SO, and 30 BB.

Batters
-Yasmani Grandal (C) spent parts of 105 games with Bakersfield (56 gms), Carolina (45 gms), and Louisville (4 gms). Overall, he hit .305 with 14 home runs, 68 RBIs, and 69 runs scored. He struck out 97 times and had 59 walks.
-Brodie Greene (SS) played in 131 games between Bakersfield (126 gms) and Carolina (5 gms). Overall, he hit .287 with 14 HR, 18 RBIs, and 82 runs scored. He struck out 75 times, and had 42 walks.

As you can see, there are some very good players beings sent to the AFL. Perhaps, the closer of the future, or maybe the future middle infield of the Reds is in this bunch. The Desert Dogs will open a 38-game slate against the Mesa Solar Sox on October 4th. *Another note involving the Reds and the Arizona Fall League involves a tragic story that some of you may remember from 2003. In November of that year, Reds outfield prospect Dernell Stenson was murdered during a carjacking. Since then, the AFL has handed out the Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award in his memory.
