Quotes & Notes: Alonso, Wood & More

  • Yonder Alonso on his right ankle injury he suffered August 5th in Chicago: “We’re doing everything possible. I’m here very early getting treatment. It’s something I’m dealing with, playing through it, not saying much to anybody. It’s part of the game. There’s really not much left of the season. You’ve got to go with it. I’m not going to say anything. God knows there are a bunch of guys nicked up."
  • Houston's Matt Downs on his eventual game-winning homer in the eighth on Monday: "I don't know if I thrive in those situations, but I like them. You can turn the game around with one at-bat. It felt great. "It was one of those at-bats where he left something out over the plate and I put the (bathead) through it."
  • Dusty Baker on Monday's 3-2 loss to the 'Stros: "We made some mistakes. We missed some signs. We missed a squeeze. We missed a 3-0 swing. We hit some balls into the ground for double plays at the wrong time...That's a game we should have won."
  • Travis Wood on learning he was starting shortly before the game: "I don't think it hurt too much. I got tired a little earlier than I would have. Other than that, I felt great. It's always better to get a little heads up than walking in the ballpark than, 'Oh, you might start today.'
  • Homer Bailey (8-7, 4.43 ERA) gets the starting nod for the Reds on Tuesday to counter Bud Norris (6-10, 3.68 ERA). Game time is set for 7:10 PM ET.
  • Fact fact: The Reds must win all eight of their remaining games to finish the season with a winning record.
