Quotes & Notes: Castellini, Baker & More

  • Joel Hanrahan on forcing in the game-tying run in the ninth: "It was one of those days I didn't have my good stuff, so you try to find a way to make it work. It's a full count there, and I think I hit my first guy of the year there. Baseball's a funny game."
  • Edinson Volquez on his start on Friday: "I felt good. We didn't win, but that's part of the game. A lot of things happen during a game, but I was happy to be back out here and pitch some innings."
  • Club owner Bob Castellini on extending GM Walt Jocketty's contract thru 2014: “Since he’s been here, Walt has vastly improved our baseball operations within the organization. You can’t develop a winning tradition without stability. Walt and his staff are doing good things here. We want to keep that momentum going.”
  • Jocketty regarding an increase in payroll next season: “Our preliminary projections are that we’ll bump it up a little. We’re still working on the end number. But it will be more than it was this year.”
  • Dusty Baker on losing another one-run game (the Reds are tied with Florida for the most in MLB w/32): "These one-run losses, they're tough to take, especially when you've got two strikes on two hitters," Baker said. "We just didn't pitch them right or pitch them effectively. Ludwick is a low-ball hitter and we were throwing the ball down. Boy, you just scratch your head sometimes."
  • The 4-3 defeat on Friday blocks any possibility of a winning season now. In order for Cincy to just achieve a .500 record, they must win all five of their remaining games (all on the road).
  • Travis Wood (6-5, 4.62 ERA) will be called upon to take the ball on Saturday opposite of Pittsburgh's Brad Lincoln (1-3, 4.85 ERA). The game is scheduled to commence at 7:05 PM ET.
