3 Reds named top 100 prospects

Folks around Cincinnati are
excited about no. 2

Baseball America released its list of the Top 100 Prospects for 2012 earlier this week. The 23rd annual publication is headlined by Nationals phenom Bryce Harper, but three Cincinnati Reds also made the cut. Here are the names of those players followed by the description BA gave them:

#16 Devin Mesoraco C
The Punxsutawney, Pa., native expects to deliver at least six more years of slugging in Cincinnati.

#48 Billy Hamilton SS
Posted the first 100-steal year in the minors in a decade; can he continue to do it at higher levels?

#75 Zack Cozart SS
Big league ready for most of the last two years; just needs to stay healthy.

One interesting side note is the list comprises two former Reds minor leaguers as well - 1B Yonder Alonso (#33) and C Yasmani Grandal (#53) - both of whom were included in the Mat Latos deal in December.

Nonetheless, having three players rank in the top 75 on this prestigious list is nothing to be ashamed about. You don't believe me? There were five teams who only had one representative and another four clubs that only boasted two. So, even with trading some of their top talent away this winter, the Reds still have a solid farm system at their disposal. And the talent at the major league level isn't looking too shabby itself.
