Reds get some love from Stark

ESPN's Jayson Stark had high praises for the Reds columnist Jayson Stark provided a rather large and interesting piece on Friday afternoon. In it he takes a look at major headlines, the best/worst signings, the most/least improved teams, and players to watch heading into Spring Training. And he had several good things to say about the Redlegs. Here they are:

* Cincinnati was listed as the third-most improved team in the National League, trailing only the Washington Nationals and Miami Marlins.

* The team's signing of closer Ryan Madson (1yr/$8.5M) was named the best one-year deal of the offseason. In fact, Stark named the move as the second-best free agent signing of the offseason overall, trailing only the Angels' Albert Pujols (10yr/$250M).

* The Mat Latos trade was voted as the third-best trade of the winter. The criteria for this one was that both teams benefited from the trade. The Sean Marshall swap also received some votes, but fell just shy of cracking the top three.

* The signing of LHP Jeff Francis was ranked as the second-best minor league deal of the offseason. Said Stark on the move: "It's still kind of amazing that it took just a minor league deal for the Reds to sign a pitcher who threw more innings (183) than anybody on their staff last year." Philadelphia's accord with RHP Joel Piniero took the top spot.

* Devin Mesoraco was listed third on the NL Rookies to Watch list, behind Julio Teheran (Braves) and Bryce Harper (Nationals).
