2012 projections: Scott Rolen

The Cincinnati third basemen is pursuing another productive
and non-injury filled season in '12

Scott Rolen is one of those few players in Major League Baseball who can positively impact a team off the field. However, if given the choice the Reds would much rather have him impact the team on the field in 2012. A shoulder ailment limited the Jasper, In. native to just 65 games last year after he posted a bit of a comeback season in 2010 (.285/20/83). Will the 7-time All-Star have a similar showing as '10? Or will the wear 'n tear of 16 big league seasons continue to take its toll?

To help give a better idea of what this upcoming season may hold for him, I've dug up projections from four different sources. They are as follows:

And here are their respective projections for Rolen:

BG: .254/.329/.386, 7 HR, 39 RBIs, 11 2Bs, 33 RS
RC: .269/.331/.439, 10 HR, 55 RBIs, 50 RS
ZiPS: .260/.315/.441, 9 HR, 51 RBIs, 23 2Bs, 84 GP
ESPN: .275/.330/.445, 10 HR, 54 RBIs, 49 RS
Career avg (16 yrs): .282/.366/.494, 22 HR, 91 RBIs, 91 RS

There may not be a harder player to project than Rolen. If he stays off the disabled list than he's liable to put up numbers closer to, or just below, his career line. But if the 37-year old continues to be hampered by injuries there's really no telling what his statistics could look like by year's end. Hopefully the 8-time Gold Glover can stay healthy, but if not the club has two players ready to take his place in Juan Francisco and Todd Frazier.
