Monday's exhibition game pitted the Redlegs against division rival Chicago in Mesa, Arizona. Unfortunately, the Reds' trip to HoHoKam Park ended in defeat as the host Cubs (5-4) downed them (5-5-1) 8-6. But there is a bit of good news. I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico. Just kidding. I'm State Farm all the way.
Here's a breakdown of the good, the bad and a few notables from Monday:
-Sean Marshall looked sharp against his old squad. The lefty fanned two in one scoreless inning of relief. He also picked off an unsuspecting runner at first base.
-Todd Frazier clubbed his third homer of the spring -- a solo shot off Cubs starter Paul Maholm in the second.
-Zack Cozart plated a pair of runs with a double in the third.
-Donald Lutz singled in two runs in the seventh -- giving him 7 RBIs on the spring.
-Chad Reineke held the Cubbies scoreless in two innings of work. He struckout two.
-Daryl Jones recorded an outfield assist by gunning down a Chicago runner at 2B.
-Cincinnati recorded a double-play on three occasions this afternoon.
-Jones also committed a fielding error -- so did Brandon Phillips. That's the second for both players in the preseason.
-Bronson Arroyo looked liked the 2011 version of himself as he surrendered six hits, two walks and four runs in just two frames.
-Denis Phipps went down on strikes in both of his at-bats. He also left a team-high three men on base.
-Carlos Fisher fell victim to a three-run homer in his lone inning of relief. The right-hander walked three batters in the inning as well.
-Exhibition or not, the Reds lose to a rival.
-The affair was played under sunny skies and 77-degree conditions. Yeah, perfect baseball weather I know.
-A rather large crowd of 9,198 witnessed the game.
-Quote of the day: "Every once in a while you're scared to pitch. This is one of those days. I've never pitched in this park." -Arroyo before his start on Monday.
-Up next for the squad is a date with the Royals on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM ET.
