Reds dealt major blow as Madson to miss season

The Redlegs received some unfortunate news on Saturday afternoon as it was announced that newly-acquired closer Ryan Madson needs Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, thus ending the right-hander's 2012 season before it even began.

Madson hadn't pitched in a live game all spring after coming down with a sore elbow early in camp.

Fellow newcomer Sean Marshall is expected to fill the closer role in his absence. Aroldis Chapman and Nick Masset are the likely candidates to setup Marshall.

Cincinnati stunned much of the baseball world when they signed the ex Phillie to a free agent deal this offseason. They did well in inking him to an affordable 1yr/$8.5M contract with a team option for 2013, but as of now it looks like the coup will be in vain.

It's the first season-ending injury he's suffered in his 9-year major league career.

Madson saved 32 games and posted a 2.37 ERA in 62 appearances for the NL East Champion Phillies in 2011.
