Seattle blisters the Redlegs 8-1

Perhaps looking ahead to their coveted off day on Wednesday, the Reds (8-11-1) took an 8-1 beating from visiting Seattle (12-7) on Tuesday. Left-hander Jeff Francis got the start opposite of Mariners' veteran Kevin Millwood. Here's a recap of the good, the bad and a few notables from the exhibition contest:

The Good:
- Brandon Phillips was 2-for-2 and scored the team's only run.
- Chris Valaika was also 2-for-2. The middle infielder is now batting .474 on the spring.
- Zack Cozart continued his hot hitting with an RBI-double. He now has four 2-baggers on the preseason.
- Roster hopeful Jeff Francis turned in a respectable outing. The southpaw limited Seattle to three runs (two runs), on seven hits while striking out five. He's yet to walk a batter all preseason.
- Sean Marshall struckout the side in his only frame of work.
- Opening Day is one day closer!

The Bad:
- The offense produced just one measly run for the second straight game.
- Kanekoa Texeira and Andrew Brackman combined to allow five runs, six hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Both right-handers are currently sporting unsightly ERAs.
- Cincy was 1-for-9 with Runners in Scoring Position.
- Jay Bruce and Joey Votto both sputtered to 0-for-3 performances.
- Reds pitchers surrendered three doubles to Seattle rookie Kyle Seager (who?).

The Notables:
- The gametime conditions were 57 degrees and sunny...a far cry (temp-wise) from the Queen City on Tuesday.
- Through 10 games played at Goodyear Park the team is drawing an average crowd of 3,795.
- The club receives a rare off-day tomorrow before hosting the Texas Rangers on Thursday. Mat Latos (1-0, 2.00) will take the mound for the Reds. He'll be followed by Ron Mahay, Nick Masset, Logan Ondrusek & Sam LeCure. Game time is slated for 10:05 ET.
