Hump day quotes and notes

"You hate a sweep, especially a four-game sweep, and they were threatening to knock on the door. We got out of here with one." -Dusty Baker on the 8-5 victory over Washington on Sunday

“In my opinion, this is a huge win. We walk out of here getting swept, it's a totally different feeling. They came back. Then Joey gets a big hit late. It’s just a big win, a really, really big win.” -Ryan Ludwick also on the win from Sunday

"I don't think the Cardinals see us at their level. I think they have a high level of confidence. I think they just see us as a stop along the way and not a real head-to-head challenge. I don't think we have earned that yet. It really is what it is. They are the world champions. They're the team that came back and had a great playoff run. They have a swagger about them that the only people they care about is who they see as the best team in the National League. I don't think they care about us. I respect that. If a team that came in third place was trying to fool with us and we had just won the World Series, we'd be like, 'Who cares?'" -Joey Votto on the Cards' view of the Reds

“He looks healthy. He was healthy when we left spring training. He hasn’t done anything not to be healthy. He’s just getting off to a slow start. It’s all over baseball. — slow starts. When he left spring training, he was swinging good.” -Baker on Scott Rolen's health

"How many times can your heart get ripped out in a short period of time? We’re playing just good enough to lose. We’ve got to execute. We practice and practice and talk about things. It’s just not happening now." -Baker after Tuesday's 2-1 loss

“I think when you’re on the road, it’s a little tougher. If you’re in extra innings and the home team wins, it’s always going to be a walk-off. It’s a little more dramatic. We’ve had some really close ballgames lately and unfortunately, we’ve been on the losing end of the stick. We’re competing. Offensively, we’re not having big innings. We’re not stringing stuff together right. Our pitching right now is doing an outstanding job.” -Ludwick

* The Reds fell to 0-5 in night games with their loss on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Cards remain undefeated at 4-0.

* They're now 1-3 in extra inning affairs. They led the league in winning percentage in extra frames last year with a mark of 12-5.

The Draft, which begins with first-round coverage on June 4 at 7 p.m. ET, will now be 40 rounds total, instead of 50.
