Reds Futures edge out big club 2-1

Lutz provided the game's biggest blow

The stars of both tomorrow (and today) were on display Tuesday night as the first ever Spring Showcase was played at GABP. Mike Leake took the ball for the Reds opposite of Dominican right-hander Daniel Corcino. In the end it was the Reds Futures who edged out the big club by a score of 2-1, thus owning bragging rights for a year to come.

Here's the good, the bad, and the notables from the festive affair:

The Good:
-Brandon Phillips and Miguel Cairo each stroked a double.
-Reds Future Billy Hamilton was 2-for-3 and showed off his wheels with a stolen base.
-Zack Cozart accounted for the team's only offense with a solo homer in the 4th.
-Donald Lutz was 2-for-2 including a 2-run homer in the top of the fourth.
-Homer Bailey, Aroldis Chapman and Sean Marshall combined to toss three scoreless innings of relief.
-Newcomer J.J. Hoover, who was acquired from Atlanta in exchange for Juan Francisco this past week, struckout the side in the third and earned the victory.

The Bad:
-Jay Bruce, Ryan Ludwick, and Drew Stubbs were all 0-for-2 with a punchout.
-The team's two biggest stars (Phillips & Joey Votto) were either caught stealing or picked off in the contest.
-The major league team managed just three hits.
-Didi Gregorious and Dennis Phipps combined to go 0-for-6 with four strikeouts.

The Notables:
-The game was called after seven innings and was played under 84-degree conditions.
-A crowd of 12,774 showed up for the last exhibition game of the preseason.
-The Reds claimed RHP Alfredo Simon from Baltimore on Tuesday. Simon was 4-9 with a 4.90 ERA in 23 games (16 starts) for the Orioles last season. He'll likely begin 2012 in Triple-A Louisville.
-The Reds will address the reported contract extension with Votto in a press conference at the stadium on Wednesday, according to John Fay of the Enquirer.
