Video: Home plate umpire trips, face plants into batter's box

It's not everyday you see a play at the plate. It's even more rare to see a play at the dish involving the home plate umpire. And no, I'm not talking about the masked official ruling a guy safe or out, I'm talking about real-live action here.

Such an incident occurred on Wednesday night during sixth inning of the Reds-Indians game at Progressive Field.

As the video clip above clearly indicates, home plate umpire Derryl Cousins got himself all tripped up when attempting to get a better look at a Zack Cozart foul ball. Things went from bad-to-worse when Cousins went face-first into the right-side of the batter's box, thus drawing some laughter from those with a sense of humor in attendance.

As humiliating as the tumble may have been, his ability to avoid getting any dirt or chalk on his black top is equally, if not more, impressive. Hats off to Cousins for saving the Tribe clubhouse manager some extra laundry detail. Nicely done.
