Notable Reds quotes from the weekend

The Redlegs (74-48) took care of business over the weekend and managed to take three out of four against The Lovable Losers from Chicago. By doing so, they were able to stretch their division lead to 6.5 games -- the largest for any first place team in baseball.

Here are some notable quotes from the series:

Friday (Win, 7-3)

+ “In the years before, we’ve always had big slides, which takes the wind out of your sails. Since the All-Star Break, it hasn’t happened. It makes you feel like the ball is always rolling in your direction. If you lose one, you feel like you have a chance to come in the next day and win a series.” -Bronson Arroyo on the team's 27-9 record since July 6th

+ "We're relaxed. We know our pitching staff is going to be there. We know we've got the hitters. Guys step up every single day. Everybody knows their role. When you know your role, everything's going to be fine." -Todd Frazier on the come-from-behind win

+ "I've always said it takes guys that are older a little longer to get it, but once they get it, they keep it for an extended period of time. That's what he's done. He's driving in runs, hitting home runs and what a welcome sight he's been since the All-Star break." -Dusty Baker on the resurgence of Ryan Ludwick this season

+ "I was pretty fired up for this one. We took a game plan out there, and it was working for a little bit, then it didn't. I just didn't make the adjustment soon enough..."It's a really tough team. They have good guys over there. I know most of them, and I know they're a good group. They're in first place." -Former Red and current Cub Travis Wood after getting tagged with the loss

Saturday (Game One) (Win, 5-3)

+ "Don't get me wrong. I like throwing at night, but I like pitching in the day, too. It's not really different. It's all in how I get prepared the night before day games." -Johnny Cueto after improving to 11-0 in day games this season, and 16-6 overall

+ "He was dealing. He has to be a serious candidate for the Cy Young Award. We don't talk about it, but that has to be in the back of his mind." -Baker on Cueto

+ "I don't know what it is. It's crazy. I'm comfortable against them and confident, like always. When I'm at the plate, I feel like I can some damage." -Frazier on playing against the Cubs

Saturday (Game Two) (Loss, 9-7)

+ “That’s what we expect. They don’t like losing and they expect to win every day. We came close, but not far enough.” -Baker on his team nearly overcoming an 8-2 deficit

+ “I’m not a guy that walks people. That’s what I take pride in, throwing strikes. I was a little upset about that.” -Todd Redmond on walking five batters (3.1 IP) in his Major League debut

+ "It's tough to sweep a doubleheader. We had opportunities. They came out and scored a big run at the end. Our backs were against the wall, but we scratched and clawed and fought and gave ourselves a chance." -Ryan Ludwick who blasted two homers (25) and drove in three runs

+ "Castro is just one of those players. He came up huge again. We found a slot for him at cleanup. It is what he does. He cuts and slashes." -Cubs manager Dale Sveum on Starlin Castro who had three hits in the affair

Sunday (Win, 5-4)

+ “It’d be better if he stays back. I know he hates not going, because even in spring training he mentioned to me about beating Philly, because that’s probably been our toughest spot to play in for the last couple years … them, period.” -Baker on Joey Votto not making the trip to Philly

+ “I think I’m pitching one more one-inning game and then a back-to-back, and then we’ll make a decision how things are going to go. I don’t have a timeline but everything’s feeling good.” -Nick Masset, who has been on the disabled list all season (shoulder), on his rehab

+ "I knew the ball was down the line and I had a chance for three. I was trying to bust it out of the box. There's a big difference between being on third with nobody out and being on second with no outs. On the first pitch, I was looking for a pitch I could drive. I went out with the mindset that, if I got a pitch I could handle, I was hacking. I got it, and luckily, I got a good swing on it." -Xavier Paul who scored the game-winning run after ripping a pinch-hit triple in the ninth

+ "It was an ugly win, but a win's a win. We've got to tighten up the defense. That's one thing we pride ourselves in. We've just got to keep working. It's a matter of concentration. We've got to go back to total concentration." -Baker after the team won despite three errors
