Notable Reds quotes from the weekend

Cincinnati (69-46) rebounded from a series opening loss to the Cubs on Thursday to take the next three games over the weekend. For their efforts, they increased their division lead to 4.5 games over the Pirates and 7.0 games over the Cardinals. All is well that ends well, right?

Here's some notable quotes from the weekend series:

Friday (W, 10-8)

+ “There was a pop-up to second base that ended 30 rows up in the stands. And that ball that (Welington) Castillo hit, it was doing the Salsa, the Merengue, the La Cucaracha and everything else. That was a tough day out there” -Dusty Baker on the gusty wind conditions

+ “It’s pretty insane. The wind part, I’ve never played in anything like it in my life. It was so funny I couldn’t stop laughing.” -Todd Frazier also on the wind

+ “We won, that’s all that matters. The way that we’ve been playing, plus we kind of had a little circus out there today, to come away with a win is pretty big.” -Homer Bailey after earning his career-high 10th win of the year

+ "I personally can't believe we lost five in a row, but it happens. This is a really, really big win, especially for the fact that we had to fight for it. It wasn't an easy win. They kept coming back. They kept fighting, and we had to keep putting up more runs, and eventually we got it done." -Ryan Ludwick who was 3-5 with a HR and 4 RS

Saturday (W, 4-2)

+ "With a runner on third, especially when I got to two strikes, I was just trying to put the ball in play. I didn't want to strike out and obviously I was fortunate enough to hit the double and get two (runs) instead of one. Big hit being able to get Bronson a win and win two in a row after losing those five." -Ludwick on his go-ahead, 2-run double in the eighth

+ "I think everyone in here is praying and wishing he can get back as soon as possible because we definitely need him on our team, but I think some of the guys have taken it as a challenge to pick one another up." -Ludwick on Votto. The Reds announced before the game that Votto was to miss 7-10 more days after having a piece of cartilage removed from his injured knee

+ “We’ve been relatively resilient, and that’s something you really can’t say about this ballclub in years past. A lot of times, once we were down, we haven’t been able to come back. Obviously Ludwick has picked us up huge in the last month. We are finding ways to win ballgames.” -Bronson Arroyo after improving to 8-7

+ "Unbelievable. This guy's awesome. He throws his changeup 94 and his slider 91. It's unbelievable. That's a fastball with other pitchers, 91, 93, but he throws [his] changeup 93. You have to swing, because you don't want to be late, you want to be up front every time. 103 miles per hour ... unbelievable." -Cubs SS Starlin Castro on Aroldis Chapman

Sunday (W, 3-0)

+ “We can all speculate. Soft mattress, not your own bed, but I’ve slept on some soft mattresses for 16 years. I woke up with it Thursday. Maybe it was the bus ride, I don’t know. Who knows? I woke up, turned in my bed and couldn’t move.” -Scott Rolen after missing his fourth straight game with an ailing back

+ "They [Reds] are in first place for one reason: They have very good pitching and have a very good bullpen." -Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano

+ "They say it's how you finish, and that's why I urged my guys to finish strong. We didn't start off too good [in Milwaukee], but you can't bring back those games. So, finish winning our last three, and then [we have] a much-needed off-day ... before we start another tough stretch." -Baker on salvaging a 3-4 road trip

+ "Really, it was just good to get runs on the board for [Cueto]," Bruce said. "Everything's going to take care of itself. I just need to have quality at-bats and put myself in a position to be successful. That's all I can worry about." -Jay Bruce after nailing a 2-run homer in the game (22)

+ “He goes right after guys. He’s not going to keep you out there forever, so it’s good. … He really pitches. When I say pitch, he’s not out there just throwing. He knows what’s going on. He knows where the out is. He’s not trying to strike everyone out. He’s got great stuff and he can throw any pitch at any time.” -Bruce on Johnny Cueto, who improved to 15-6 with the win

Next up for the front-running Redlegs is a 3-game set against the New York Mets at home beginning on Tuesday. They are enjoying an off day on Monday for the first time in 17 games and two and a half weeks.
