A sure way to tell this is a special season – not even the
Philadelphia curse can keep the Reds at bay. The Redlegs found a way to win in
the City of Brotherly Love once again Wednesday night, holding on for a 3-2
victory.
Bronson Arroyo (10-7) was awesome on the hill, the Reds had
just enough timely hitting and Aroldis Chapman held on in the ninth
inning. For the complete breakdown, read on.
The breakdown of the evening’s festivities:
The Good
-Bronson Arroyo. The crafty veteran was outstanding on this
night, working eight innings of three hit, two run ball. He did not walk a
batter and he struck out four. Arroyo has been outstanding overall over his
last 10 starts, allowing three runs or less seven of those outings. Oh by the
way, he threw just 86 pitches tonight.
-Chapman shut down the door (again) in the ninth for his 31st
save. He did allow a hit, but nothing more.
-The three guys the Reds are going to count on the most in
October – and it looks like we can talk about October baseball now – Drew
Stubbs, Ryan Ludwick and Jay Bruce all drove in runs, including Bruce hitting
his 26th home run. We know that the Reds are going to get production
from Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto, when he’s healthy. It’s these three guys
that can make or break the pennant run.
-Ryan Hanigan went 2-for-3 and is batting .293 on the
season.
-Todd Frazier had another hit and is hitting .294. Anyone
think he can hit .300 for the year?
-Only one position player, Scott Rolen, did not collect at
least one hit.
The Bad
-Rolen had a very rare error, his ninth of the year.
-Was Chapman really necessary tonight? After all, Arroyo was
at just 86 pitches after eight. Still, this is nitpicking as obviously things
worked out and it was just a one run game.
The Notables
-41,794 took in the battle. Philly still can pack the house
despite a down year.
-Cincinnati banged out 11 hits during the night.
-With the win, the Reds moved to 76-49 overall while the
Phillies slumped to 57-67.
-Johnny Cueto (16-6) will attempt to give the Reds a series
victory as he opposes Cole Hamels (14-6) in a 7:05 affair on Thursday.
