Reds quotes from the weekend

The Reds (88-59) narrowly missed getting swept in Miami over the weekend by escaping with a 5-4 win in 11 innings on Sunday. They get a chance to rest up with an off-day on Monday before engaging in a 3-game home series with the Cubs beginning on Tuesday.

In the meantime, here are some quotes from the Marlins series:

Friday (Marlins 4, Reds 0)

+ “We couldn’t get anything going. It was two balls and no strikes before you looked up. He threw a good game against us. It’s been a long time since we got shut out. I can’t even remember the last time.”
-Dusty Baker

+ “We just couldn’t put any pressure on those guys, which is little disappointing. Even when you give up four, if you put up a couple of runs, it makes you feel like you’ve got a chance.”
-Bronson Arroyo, who saw his saw five-game winning streak snapped

+ "This ballpark negated our long ball. Brandon hit one a ton out there we thought, and Joey hit one good, and those balls weren't even close."

+ "He's very impressive in the zone. It's impressive how few walks he has thrown. It bodes well for him."
-Joey Votto on 21-year Jacob Turner, who threw seven shutout innings to earn the win

Saturday (Marlins 6, Reds 1)

+ “Other teams read that he’s Player of the Week. That means they’re going to pitch you tough. They say, ‘he’s hot. Don’t let Jay beat you.’ That’s what happens. It’s Jay not doing something. It’s them not allowing Jay to do something."
-Baker regarding Jay Bruce's recent struggles at the plate

+ “I don’t know how to explain it to you. Things happen. You have to take it easy. Thank God, I feel healthy and feel good. I just got to keep going.”
-Johnny Cueto after losing his third straight start

+ "I think we did a good job trying to make him (Cueto) throw the ball over the plate and we made him work a couple innings. We ran the bases very well and took advantage of a couple extra bases. Obviously, Carlos' home run was huge. It gave us a little cushion." -Marlins skipper Ozzie Guillen

+ "Fortunately, we scored some runs early and I just tried to go out there and keep them off base."
-Miami starter Mark Buehrle

Sunday (Reds 5, Marlins 4 F/11)

+ “Position or no position, we’ve got a big investment in him. The guy has a bright future. The position we’re in has nothing to do with the situation. The position helps.” -Baker on when injured closer Aroldis Chapman will return

+ “I don’t know. Whenever his body tells him he’s ready. He’s progressing. I can’t give you a definitive answer.” -Baker on when injured SS Zack Cozart will return

+ “Personally, I think that was a good one to win,” Ludwick said. “We lost the first two. We didn’t play quite as good as we have all year long. We got the lead and they battled back and tied it up. We were like, ‘Man, we need to win.’ That was a big one for us. This is team battling to spoil things. They gave us all we could handle for three straight days. It was good to get that one.” -Ryan Ludwick
