Selsky, Langfield named Reds Minor League Players of the Month

Press release from the Reds...

CINCINNATI - Class A Bakersfield OF Steve Selsky and Rookie Billings RHP Dan Langfield have been named the Cincinnati Reds' Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for August.

Selsky, 23, in 28 games with Bakersfield last month led all Reds farmhands in batting average (.380) and hits (41). He also ranked among the California League leaders in hits (1st), batting (4th) and on-base percentage (.452, 3rd).

In 128 games this season between Bakersfield and Dayton, Selsky hit .317. His 18 home runs tied for third-most in the organization and his 74 RBI ranked second.

The Manhatten Beach, California native was selected by the Reds in 33rd round of the 2011 first-year player draft out of the University of Arizona.

"Steve Selsky is just a baseball player, and that's the biggest compliment I can give to a guy," Bakersfield Manager Ken Griffey, Sr. said. "If you didn't look at the stats, you wouldn't know how well he's done. He's not flashy, he just does everything right. He can hit, he can catch, he plays a solid right field and he can throw a bit. He's just been incredible for us the whole second half."
br/> Langfield, 21, in 6 apps and 4 starts for Billings in August allowed just one earned run in 17.1 innings and struck out 30 batters, which tied for fourth among all Pioneer League pitchers for the month. He allowed 11 hits, issued just six walks and posted a 1-0 record and 0.52 ERA.

"I'm really excited," Langfield said. "I've been working hard this season to fix some things. Tony (Fossas) has been helping out a lot, and when (Mark) Riggins came down he gave me a few pointers to work on. Everything is starting to feel a lot better mechanics-wise, and while I'm out on the mound - just being a lot more comfortable. It seems like it's falling into place right now, I just still have to keep working to get better."

In 15 apps and 5 starts in 2012, Langfield compiled a 3-0 record and 2.68 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 37.0 innings.

The 6-1, 210-pound right-hander was selected by the Reds in the third round of the this year's first-year player draft out of the University of Memphis.

"Dan has done a great job for us this season," Billings Manager Pat Kelly said. "We used him in a tandem role and limited his innings because of how much he threw in college. Dan has four quality pitches and can be overpowering. He flourished in the month of August."
