Recapping the season of Mat Latos

Expectations were sky high entering the 2012 season for Mat Latos. The Reds dealt a king's ransom during the offseason to acquire the right-hander's services from San Diego, and all in hopes that he could be the No. 2 starter the team so desperately needed. After watching how is individual campaign unfolded, I would venture to say that his first season in Cincinnati can be viewed as a successful one.

Here are some notables regarding Latos' year:

+ Was acquired from San Diego on December 17, 2011 in exchange for four players
+ Favored pitching during the day as evidenced by his 6-0 record and 2.76 ERA during day games
+ By comparison, he sported an 8-4 mark and 4.04 ERA in starts made during night games
+ Finished with 12 hits (.185 BA) to set a new career high
+ Struggled pitching against the Cardinals (4g, 1-2, 7.84 ERA)
+ Only lost twice in 28 starts after the month of April (13-2)
+ Despite concerns from pundits about him pitching in GABP, he actually posted a lower ERA at home (3.18) than he did on the road (3.93)
+ Posted career highs in starts (33), Wins Above Replacement (4.2), and innings pitched (209.1) while tying his career high in wins (14)
+ Did not commit an error all year long
+ Led the team in strikeouts (185)
+ Ranked second in the NL in winning percentage (.778)
+ Pitched back-to-back complete games in late-June
+ His most dominant outing likely came on June 25 when he fanned 13 Brewers and allowed only four hits and a run in a CG masterpiece
+ Finished tied for the league lead in games started
+ Came up huge in Game One of the NLDS when he went four strong innings in relief of injured ace Johnny Cueto
+ He faltered during the pivotal Game Five though, lasting only 4.1 innings and allowing six runs in all
+ Earned a base salary of $550,000

Fast fact: Latos is under team control for the next four seasons before he is eligible to enter free agency.
Here's a look back at the players who's seasons we have already covered:
