Dusty Baker made a second round of cuts Saturday morning to trim the remaining Reds roster down to 39 players.
Those were sent packing including RHP Curtis Partch, INF Henry Rodriguez, 1B Neftali Soto, RHP Pedro Villarreal, and 1B Donald Lutz.
Lutz was optioned to Double-A Pensacola -- the same place he finished last season.
Despite being axed, Lutz actually performed well this spring. The slugger batted .360 (9-25) with one homer, seven RBI, and six runs scored.
The remaining 39 players are battling for just 25 spots on the Opening Day roster.
However, when you truly break it down, there really only remains a few open spots available. The most interesting battle involves Jason Donald, Cesar Izturis, and Emmanuel Burriss for the last bench spot. Donald may have the upper-hand just because the other two are non-roster invitees.
