Brandon Phillips away from team due to private matter

The Reds will be without the services of All-Star second basemen Brandon Phillips for at least Tuesday's game in Oakland after it was announced that he was away from the team because of a personal matter.

Upon further review, it appears as though that personal matter has to do with impending fatherhood, as the transactions page on MLB.com currently lists Phillips on paternity leave.

Major League Baseball adopted the paternity list in 2011 and it allows players one to three days to be away from the team for the birth of a child. Teams are able to replace the player on the active roster while they are gone.

The Reds enjoyed an off day Monday and will have another on Thursday after partaking in a two-game series against the Athletics in between. So, it isn't out of the realm of possibility to believe that Phillips won't be back in the lineup until Friday's series opener in Texas.

The 31-year-old is hitting .265 with 11 home runs and 60 RBI in 2013.
