Reds to play originally scheduled game for Cincinnati in San Francisco on July 23

The July 4 game between the Giants and Reds that was rained out at Great American Ball Park has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on July 23.

However, the catch is that the game will be played at AT&T Park in San Francisco, and not in the city it was originally planned for.

The peculiar arrangement was made necessary due to the fact that the Giants weren't scheduled to return to Cincinnati for any more games. Furthermore, the teams had only one common day off, August 29, but playing on that day would have required the players on both sides to break Collective Bargaining Agreement rules and play 34 straight days. A neutral-site game played at Coors Field was considered.

The only other viable option was to play the game the day after the regular season ends. However, league officials were weary that it could potentially interfere with playoff scheduling.

Instead, the Reds will be the designated home team in the first game of the doubleheader on July 23, while the Giants will be the home team in the second game. Both teams will have to switch their uniforms in between games to adhere to the traditional home and away attire.

Fans who have tickets for the originally scheduled July 23 game will be allowed to use their ticket for admittance into both.

The Reds have yet to announce how refunds will be issued to fans who held tickets to the July 4 date. But the Reds are rumored to receive at least a portion of the revenue for the doubleheader.
