Joey Votto couldn't believe it at first. And neither could anyone else in Miller Park when Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez robbed a potential go-ahead home run to seal a 4-3 victory Monday night for Milwaukee.
The jaw-dropping play came with two outs, and one runner aboard, in the top of the ninth when Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez allowed a deep drive off the bat of Votto. The ball sent Gomez all the way to the edge of the center field wall before he jumped up and pulled the ball back to rip out the hearts of Reds fans everywhere.
Votto was so in disbelief at what he just saw that he emphatically asked the second base umpire to make Gomez reveal that he had indeed caught the baseball. Gomez flashed the evidence and the rest is history.
The catch is sure to be one seen over and over in the coming days and might even go down as one of the best grabs of the entire season.
