If it wasn't for this heads up play by Joey Votto in the seventh inning, Homer Bailey would not have been credited with his second career no-hitter Tuesday night.
The fateful moment came with one out, Buster Posey at the plate, and Gregor Blanco leading off second base. This is when Posey bounced an 0-2 pitch from Bailey down to Votto at first. The ball pulled Votto far away from the bag, causing Bailey to have to scramble in order to beat Posey, but it looked like Posey was going to be safe by a big margin.
So, Votto wisely kept his options open and fired on to Todd Frazier at third base, who tagged out Blanco to record a fielder's choice. More importantly, however, it preserved the no-hitter.
Bailey certainly deserves a ton of credit for twirling a masterful gem. But Votto deserves huge props for this monumental defensive play, too.
