Reds rank 20th in dubious uniform rankings

Have you ever wondered how the various uniforms worn by the Reds compares to the other 29 Major League Baseball teams? Probably not. But in case you have, a recent post by Paul Lukas of Uni Watch is about to make you extremely happy.

Lukas, the man who admits to being obsessed with the aesthetics of sports, has embarked on a journey to rank all 122 uniforms worn by teams in North America's four major sports leagues (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB). On Monday, Lukas kicked off the series by providing a ranking for MLB clubs. As fate would have it, Cincinnati didn't rate too highly in his opinion, coming in at No. 20 on the dubious list.

Here's what he had to say:

They'd rank higher if not for all the black trim, which feels sooooo 1990s. A more conventional number font would help, too, wrote Lukas.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in the field of judging athletic uniforms. I'll leave that job up to Lukas. However, I believe these rankings are about as subjective as any set of rankings can come.

The following criteria is all I could really find regarding how Lukas decided to score each team's uniform set.

Each team has been ranked primarily on the basis of its current home and road uniforms, with alternate uniforms taken into account if they're part of the team's regular uni rotation. One-off designs, special promotions, throwbacks and so on have not been considered.

Naturally, Lukas seems enamored by the threads worn by the rival Cardinals, tabbing them as having the best uniforms in baseball. The Cubs, Athletics, Phillies, and Dodgers rounded out the top five.

Meanwhile, the Padres begrudgingly finished dead last, as Lukas called their uniforms the blandest in MLB. The Marlins finished second-to-last with their rainbow colored attire.
