After a devastating pair of loses to the Brew Crew, and with Carlos Gomez robbing another Reds potential winning home run, there are definitely reasons to hang your head as a Reds fan. But there are definitely things to be happy about, too!
One thing to look forward to is Shin-Soo Choo possibly taking a hometown discount and resigning with the Reds. There is no way of knowing exactly what will happen, especially with Scott Boras as his agent. For those of you who don't know, Scott Boras is a baseball agent who is notorious for getting his clients very high paying contracts, higher than most teams really want. Some other players he represents are: Pedro Alvarez of the Pirates, Stephen Drew of the Red Sox, and Prince Fielder of the Tigers. My Reds insider has told me that everyone in the clubhouse is very optimistic about Choo resigning and saying that Choo really does enjoy Cincy and wants to return.
Even though it's looking more and more like the Reds are going to be in the National League Wild Card game, don't lose hope. The Reds are only 3.5 games back in the division and there is still a lot of baseball left to play. The Reds still have 6 games against the Pirates, which could end up being the deciding factor. Even if the Reds make the playoffs as a Wild Card team there is no reason we cannot play far into October.
Another plus is Johnny Cueto's return. Personally, I am a big fan of Cueto. Johnny made the most starts of any pitcher in the NL last season and his 217 innings pitched were 5th most in the NL. I am interested to see how the Reds will use Cueto. With the minor league season over, Cueto must play big league ball as his rehab. I have heard the Reds might couple him with Greg Reynolds in his next start to make sure the bullpen isn't drained, probably something along the lines of Cueto for 2-3 innings and Reynolds for 3-4 depending on productivity and the situation.
