Reds officially announce 2014 coaching staff

After a relatively long wait, new Reds skipper Bryan Price has finally announced his coaching staff.

Although it was previously reported that Jay Bell, Don Long, and Jeff Pico were to serve as bench coach, hitting coach, and pitching coach, respectively, the word was mum on the rest of the coaches until a formal announcement was made Wednesday afternoon.

Three members of the old coaching staff will return under Price's regime: Mack Jenkins (bullpen coach), Billy Hatcher (first base coach), Mike Stefanski (catching coach). Meanwhile, Steve Smith will assume the third base coaching duties, and Frank Benavides will assist in infield instruction.

Bell spent last season with the Pirates as their hitting coach under manager Clint Hurdle.

Long has spent the last three years as the minor league hitting coordinator for the Braves.

Pico was plucked away from the Diamondbacks organization after spending the last 11 seasons there.

Smith is a 38-year veteran of professional baseball and last served as third base coach for the Indians in 2012.

Benavides has spent the last six years as the Reds' player development field coordinator. All in all, Benavides has spent the last 15 seasons in the organization.
