Report: Yankees turn down Brandon Phillips-Brett Gardner swap

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the New York Yankees were reportedly offered second basemen Brandon Phillips from the Reds in exchange for outfielder Brett Gardner, which the Yankees kindly declined, most likely due in part to the remaining $50 million left on Phillips' contract.

Despite Cincinnati's public attempt to diffuse any trade rumors involving Phillips last week, any sensible outsider could see their desire to move him was alive and well, especially if the right offer came along. Well, apparently the Reds decided to act on their ambitions Wednesday night, and were subsequently stonewalled by the Bronx Bombers.

If Heyman's report is true, the trade proposal in and of itself will add further strain to an already deteriorating relationship between the Reds and their 32-year-old All-Star.

Update 11:01 PM: It appears the real snag in the deal may have come when Phillips asked to add more money to his contract.
