Chris Nelson asks for release from Reds

It appears Chris Nelson will not be in the mix with the Reds this season after opting out of his contract and asking for his release, reports Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com.

The 28-year-old was hoping to nab a spot on the Opening Day roster after accepting an invitation to spring training as a non-roster player. Unfortunately, that plan didn't come to fruition.

Nelson batted a respectable .317/.348/.463 with one home run and seven runs batted in this preseason in 41 at-bats. However, manager Bryan Price and the rest of the powers that be didn't see Nelson as worthy of one of the 25 spots on the roster.

It's back to the drawing board for Nelson after having spent the 2013 season with three different clubs (LAA, COL, NYY).
