Chris Speier takes new leadership role with Reds

Chris Speier, who most recently served as Cincinnati's bench coach on Dusty Baker's coaching staff, has been named a special assistant to general manager Walt Jocketty.

According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Speier will be primarily involved in scouting at the major league level and instruction in the minors.

Speier joins a whole host of others who currently hold the title of "special assistant to the general manager." Two of these include Mario Soto and Eric Davis.

The legitimacy of having special assistants to the GM has always been a mystery to me. In my opinion, they seem more like figureheads, but I'm sure they bring something to the table or else the Reds wouldn't give them the role.
