Report: Woman files lawsuit against Alfredo Simon alleging rape
Alfredo Simon is being accused of raping a woman in a Washington D.C. hotel room last year. This is according to a report from NBC Washington that cites a civil suit filed in D.C. on Thursday.
According to the suit, the woman claims she met Simon when the Reds were in town to play the Nationals for a four-game series in April 2013. The two allegedly met at a downtown nightclub hours after Simon finished playing a game for Cincinnati.
Simon and the woman went back to the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel before things allegedly took a physical turn. When things became too rough, the woman claims she told Simon to stop, but Simon did not oblige and proceeded to pin her down and rape her to the point of bleeding, the suit claims.
The woman went to the hospital the next day and reported the incident to the police. No criminal charges were filed at the time though.
The accuser is seeking $5 million in compensatory damages and $10 million in punitive damages.
The timing of the lawsuit comes when Simon's value as a professional is at an all-time high. Simon is 3-1 with a 1.30 ERA in four starts in 2014 and has shown the ability to transition from a long reliever to a formidable starting pitcher.
Regardless of the timing, the allegations against him are very serious and should not be taken lightly. Time will obviously tell how this case plays out, but it's put both Simon and the Reds in an unenviable position for the time being.
